The lecture Data Communication and Internet Technology (short: DC&IT) will be offered by the external lecturer Dr. Markus Esch (senior researcher in Fraunhofer FKIE) in cooperation with the Institute of Computer Science 4 (Prof. Dr. Peter Martini).DC&IT is a lecture in the study program of B-IT Media Informatics.
The lecture DC&IT will be opened for participation of Bonn Master students in Master Computer Science as module MA-INF 3101 High Performance Networking (short: HPN).
The DC&IT lecture in the B-IT program will start (late) at Tuesday 29.10.2013, the lecture is V3Ü2 (L3E2). In the winter semester (WS13/14) this equals a total of 39 lecture hours up to the last lecture on Tuesday 04.02.02014.
The HPN module of Bonn Master requires (only) V2Ü2 (L2E2), which requires a total of 30 lecture hours for a whole semester of 15 weeks.
Opening DC&IT for HPN participants in an (approximately) equal way will be done by:
- Visiting the introductory lecture on 29.10.2013 (3 lecture hours)
- Skipping three lecture weeks 05.11. – 19.11.2013 (equals 9 lecture hours)
- Joining the DC&IT course from week 26.11.2013 (up to 04.02.2014 equals 27 lecture hours)
HPN participants are (voluntarily) invited to join the lectures in the weeks 5.11.-19.11.- lecture topics will not be subject to HPN exams and primarily cover a refresher of fundamental topics on data communication, networkingand distributed systems.
Requirements to get admitted to exam participation:
In the DC&IT / HPN course, a total of 2 (two) practical assignment sheets will be issued, containing tasks of practical nature to apply programming skills in the topic area of data communication and networking/distributed systems.
The solutions need to be delivered in written form (including software) and willbe personally presented in small teams of students*) to the lecture team. To get admitted to the exams, bothpractical assignment sheets need to be solved and presented in satisfactory way.
*) the student team size for the practical exercise will be determined when the total number of participating students is known (i.e. during the first week of running the course).
- joining an exercise solution group
- active contribution to the solution of all homework assignments in the exercise solution group
- regular submission of the exercise group solutions (in written form for the theoretic and algorithmic tasks and electronically for the programming exercises)
- Up to the date where the admission decision is made: achievement of at least 50% of all possible points that can be received for the solutions submitted and for the oral presentation of the programming exercises
- joining an exercise solution group

- regular submission of the exercise group solutions (in written form for the theoretic and algorithmic tasks and electronically for the programming exercises)
- Up to the date where the admission decision is made: achievement of at least 50% of all possible points that can be received for the solutions submitted and for the oral presentation of the programming exercises
- passing of the mid-term exercise checkup
50% der zu erreichenden Punkte in den Übungsaufgaben (Arbeit in 2-erGruppen möglich).
paper and pencil assignments, and programming assignments.
The assignments shall be worked out in 2 person groups.
The point for the paper and pencil assignments are acquired and justified by presenting and discussing the solutions in the exercise groups in front of a small audience.
The points for the programming assignments are acquired by handing in a working program, including the documented source code, and by demonstrating the capabilities of the program.
Active participation in the exercise groups is mandatory to practice presentation and discussion of the respective lecture dependent contents from the assignments.
- joining an exercise solution group
- regular submission of the exercise group solutions with satisfactory success, i.e., achievement of 50% of all possible points up to the date where the admission decision is made
